An NOC (No Objection Certificate) is issued by the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service and confirms the government has no objection to your pet crossing India's border. Imports require an advance NOC applied for before the flight; exports require an AQCS-endorsed health certificate. The application typically takes about five working days.

Which pathway applies to bringing my pet back to India?

There are three. Transfer of Residence applies if you have lived abroad for two years and are relocating to India permanently. Re-import applies if the pet originally left India and you hold the original AQCS export certificate. Everything else needs a DGFT short-stay licence obtained before the NOC application.

How long is a pet health certificate valid?

Most Indian airlines accept a fitness certificate issued within 10 days of travel, and many want it dated within 72 hours. Destination countries impose their own, often stricter, windows. We date every certificate to satisfy the tightest rule in the chain.

How long does an AQCS NOC take?

About five working days once the application is filed correctly, which is the important qualifier. An application with a microchip number that does not match the vaccination record restarts the clock rather than being corrected in place. We file in the final fortnight before travel, after every supporting document exists, precisely so the five days are five days.

Does my pet need a microchip to travel?

For international travel, yes, and it must be an ISO 11784/11785 chip implanted before the rabies vaccination that supports the titre. A chip added afterwards invalidates the sequence no matter how good the titre result is. Domestically it is not universally required, though several airlines ask for it and it is the single cheapest insurance against a pet being untraceable in transit.

Do I need an NOC for a domestic flight within India?

No. An AQCS NOC concerns animals crossing India's border. A domestic flight needs a veterinary fitness certificate, a current vaccination record and the airline's live-animal form. If anyone quotes you an NOC fee for a Delhi to Chennai move, ask what it is for. That is a charge we have seen on other people's invoices and it should not be on yours.

Is pet insurance required for relocation?

No authority in India requires it and no airline demands it for acceptance. Transit cover exists and is worth considering on long international routings, particularly where a connection or quarantine is involved, but it is genuinely optional. Documents for moving a dog

For a domestic flight a dog needs a veterinary fitness-to-fly certificate dated inside the airline's window, a current rabies vaccination record, the carrier's live-animal declaration and, for large breeds on several airlines, a muzzle and chain listed on the form. For an international move the same dog needs an ISO-standard microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination that supports the titre, the titre report itself, parasite treatments inside the destination's windows, an AQCS-endorsed health certificate and the destination's import permit. Order matters more than anything: a step done early in the wrong sequence has to be done again.

A cat's paperwork is the dog's paperwork with fewer breed clauses and one extra trap. Domestically it is the fitness certificate, the vaccination record and the airline form. Internationally it is the same microchip-then-rabies-then-titre chain, and the trap is that several countries impose different treatment requirements on cats than on dogs, some ask for treatments cats do not need, some drop requirements that apply to dogs, so a checklist written for a dog will quietly fail for a cat.
