Domestic pet relocation across India

Two to three weeks is comfortable for a domestic move. It leaves room for the vet fitness certificate, crate familiarisation and a confirmed live-animal booking. We do handle 48-hour emergencies, but options narrow and costs rise.

Some Indian carriers permit small pets in cabin on select domestic sectors, subject to weight limits (usually the pet plus carrier under about 5–7 kg), breed rules and advance approval. We confirm the live policy for your exact flight and book it where it is genuinely available.

No. Sedation is discouraged for air travel because it affects breathing and temperature regulation at altitude. We manage anxiety with crate familiarisation, familiar-smelling bedding, correct crate sizing and calm handling instead.

Pugs, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Boxers, Persian cats and other brachycephalic breeds face real breathing risk in cargo, and many airlines restrict or refuse them. We usually route them by escorted train or a dedicated road van, or on the rare cabin-eligible sector.

For anything under about 1,200 km it is a shared road van, starting around ₹9,000. For longer distances it is the brake van on a train with an escort, from about ₹15,000. Flying is almost never the cheapest option once the crate, the terminal handling and both airport transfers are counted. It is the fastest, which is a different thing.

For a domestic flight with a healthy, vaccinated, cabin-eligible pet, yes, and we will say so on the first call. It gets harder when the crate has to pass an acceptance checklist, when the sector is under a heat embargo, when the animal travels without you as manifest cargo, or when a border is involved. Those are the cases where a coordinator earns their fee.

The travel itself is same-day by air, 24–40 hours by train and 8–30 hours by road. The preparation is what takes time: 7–14 days for the vet certificate, crate familiarisation and a confirmed live-animal booking. When people say a move took three weeks, almost all of that was preparation, and almost none of it was travel.

Birds, rabbits and small mammals travel domestically with the right documentation and containers, usually by road or rail. Species listed under the Wildlife (Protection) Act cannot be moved commercially at all, and we decline those enquiries rather than working around them. Tell us the species on the first call and we will tell you immediately whether it is possible.

By road, yes: one vehicle, one price, and siblings travel better together. By rail, one escort covers a household. By air it depends on the carrier: some accept two compatible small animals in one container, most insist on one per crate, which means separate freight charges for each.
